Most people subconsciously think of New Year’s resolutions. New year, new……….? Regardless of our New Year’s resolutions, we all want to make progress. Many of us procrastinate, feel stuck, or don’t even attempt to start our goals.
To help tackle this, I want you to engage in asking yourself these simple questions:
I want to get into Ohno Taiichi’s story. Ohno was the father of the Toyota production system and efficiency was his language; an art of doing more with less. To do so, he created a methodology of the ‘Five Why’s’.
Ohno would ask himself “why?” five times. He believed that by the fifth “why?” the root cause of the problem should become prevalent.
Why have I been dissatisfied lately?
Because I haven’t been able to progress on my goals.
Why haven’t been able to progress on my goals?
Because I have been trying to do too much at once.
Why have I been trying to do too much at once?
Because I have felt inadequate.
Why have I felt inadequate?
Because I have been comparing my life.
Why have I been comparing my life to others?
Because I spend too much time on social media.
Get to the core of the issue. Delve deeper into why you have been delaying what you said you wanted to be done. In the scenario example above, we examined why a person felt dissatisfied by asking “why?” five times to try and reach a cause.
So, when you are faced with a problem give the 5 “why’s” a try to see if you can reach a conclusion. Write it down on paper and see what conclusions you can come up with.
Yes! So many times we skip a step in our problem and stay in the same loop.
