Do you sit down with yourself occasionally to think about wise words you perhaps heard from books you’ve read, family, friends, a stranger giving a TED talk or a quote you simply saved from Instagram?
We’ve all been there and more. Sometimes those words of wisdom might come from the least expected place or person you may think about, but may have a profound effect on your life and the detours you make.
I know that aligning pieces of wisdom into our lives may feel overwhelming at times since change is difficult. Letting go of who we had been can be difficult. Yet it is important to realize that ending up in the same scene over and over ends up leading to an intoxicated life.
Not all pieces of wisdom may strike a chord with us, however, I believe that there are universal pieces of wisdom that we should at least be reminded of, even if we don’t implement them now. Here are a couple that I have collected and saved in my notes throughout the years.
Let’s begin, shall we?
1. What game are you playing in life?
This one stems from questioning yourself honestly about what you’re doing in life. It’s truly amazing when we peel back the layers of our own lives and gain a deeper perspective. You need to ask yourself:
Do I know what game I am playing in life?
Do I want the outcome of playing the game?
You could be putting effort into something with an outcome that you don’t really want. A simple example is that one could be working on starting a business model they saw has worked with somebody, however, they don’t really understand what they’re doing or where to go with it. Or, one could be in an academic path that has been set for them and the outcome of their studies is not what they want to eventually pursue. So, if you don’t know what game you are playing in life or you are playing a game without wanting its prize, then you need to perhaps reassess your life.
2. How much is fear controlling you?
Don’t get me wrong, feeling fear is a good thing. When it comes to something important to our growth, feeling fear means that you actually care. Whether it's personal or professional, growth feels appealing and daunting at the same time. It’s only biological that we feel resistance to the path of growth. I came across an article about human energy which found that “people move in ways that minimize their energetic cost.” You are wired to feel slack and lazy when trying to change something in your life. Heck the more you care about your growth, the more resistance you will face due to fear. Fear will try to cripple you because you care. Racing thoughts will run through your head. Am I good enough? Will I fail? How will I face failure if it happens? Remember that you are not alone in this feeling. It is liberating to think that the feeling of fear is showing. It means you care! The best way to overcome this fear is just by starting and not attaching yourself too much to how the process will unfold. Most of the fear is probably only in your head. Just start!
Take a break for a min. Breathe in and out. Enjoy a moment of solitude.
Now continue…
3. Are you asking for help?
I don’t know why many of us are resistant to asking for help. It almost feels that we aren't capable enough if we are asking for help. You don’t have to be good at everything and you will not be good at everything. Handing over the task to someone trusted who can help us in the process is not a sign of weakness. It is a proactive approach to addressing challenges. Asking for help gives us the opportunity to tap into the knowledge and experiences of others, enriching our own understanding. Being stuck in something because we are not sure how to go on about it and refusing to allow help from others, will probably waste efficiency and a lot of time. Remember that this is part of human connectedness. We are social beings and seeking help from the right source enables us to build relationships, trust and understanding.
4. Are you in yesterday?
It hurts, but you should remind yourself that dwelling in the past will not help you move forward. Even if the past was positive and the memories were happy, you are not doing yourself a favor by focusing on it too much. What happened yesterday, a month ago, or back in high school was all part of your journey. It is not within your current control. What you can do though, is reflect and learn from your past to assess whether or not to repeat patterns. You can make the choice!
5. Are you risking it?
Take that risk, ok? But don’t get your adrenaline rushing and go jump at it without thinking. Taking risks is great because it usually means that you are pushing for change in your life. You need to pause and assess if the risk is worth it. Calculate the risk. Sometimes taking that risk on a whim can only be reckless and result in an undesired outcome. Sit down, calculate the risk, weigh your options, and go ahead!
Obviously, life lessons are endless. Here are today’s lessons for you to ponder over. ♡
On a savoury note, here’s a brunch picture sent by the lovely Emma.
